What to Know Before Taking Your NBCE Part 1 Exam

🧪 Exam Overview


The Part I Exam comprises 255 multiple-choice questions, divided into two sessions:


Session 1: General Anatomy, Spinal Anatomy, Physiology

Session 2: Chemistry, Pathology, Microbiology​


Students have a total of 3 hours and 26 minutes to complete the exam, with appointments lasting 4 hours to accommodate a tutorial, an optional 15-minute break, and a post-exam survey.


🎓 Eligibility Criteria


To sit for the Part I Exam:

Current students must be in their second year at an NBCE-recognized chiropractic college, with registrar approval.


Note: Once all domains are passed, retakes are only permitted if mandated by a state licensing authority.


📚 Preparation Resources


The NBCE provides a detailed Part I Test Plan outlining topics and weightings.

Additionally, Sample Tests are available for each domain ($15 each) or all domains combined ($60) on the nbce.org website.

While these tests offer an overall score, they do not indicate specific correct or incorrect responses.

🏢 Testing Locations & Rules

Exams are administered at chiropractic colleges and testing centers nationwide. Students must bring one form of ID. Personal items, including car keys (except one key), are not permitted in the testing area.


📅 Scheduling & Fees

Exam Fee: $710

Individual Domain Retakes: $335 per domain​

Withdrawals or rescheduling are permitted through the scheduling tool on the nbce.org website.​


✅ Passing Score

A minimum score of 375 is required to pass the Part I Examination.
